GANADA KOREAN Hongdae held a special short Korean class for students from Kanazawa University who were visiting Korea. The students learned Korean, tried using it themselves, and spent time getting a little closer to Korean culture.
This meeting was a special experience that added Korean study to their visit to Korea. From studying together in the classroom to the commemorative photos taken with their certificates, here is a look at the time we shared with the students.
What kind of class did the Kanazawa University students take part in?
The programme was a special short Korean class prepared for Kanazawa University students visiting Korea. At GANADA KOREAN Hongdae, we spent the time together so they could learn Korean, try using it, and experience Korea through the language.
When you meet a language you have been studying abroad in the country where it is spoken, even familiar words can feel new. You hear as sound the expressions you once only read, you say them yourself, and you connect them with the Korean all around you. We hoped this class, too, would help the students remember their visit to Korea more richly.
Time spent studying Korean at the desk
The class photos show the students with their materials spread out, taking notes as they study. In the textbooks and handouts on the desks and the pens in their hands, you can see how the students set aside time to learn even in the middle of their visit.
A Korean class is a time for getting to know what is in the book, and also a time for actually using the language you have learned. Checking the meaning of a new expression and trying it in your own words connects study with use. Even within a short meeting, being able to share time where students met and practised Korean first-hand meant a great deal to us as well.
When a Korean class is added to a visit to Korea
While travelling or visiting, you come across all kinds of Korean — signs, notices, menus. After studying Korean in class, looking around may spark words you want to work out or expressions you want to check again. That is where learning in the classroom and experience on the ground connect.
In this class as well, we hoped the students would build up not only Korean but also a variety of experiences and memories in Korea. Our wish was that the time spent learning the language would not stay just one item on the itinerary, but would become a reason to feel a little closer to Korea.
Commemorative photos taken with their certificates
The completion photos capture the students holding their certificates to mark the time they spent together. A photo taken inside the classroom where they studied, and a group photo taken together in front of the school, record this meeting as two different scenes.
A certificate is a record of taking part in the class, and a photo is a record that helps you remember the people you studied with and the place. We hope that when the students look at these photos later, the classroom where they studied Korean and the time they spent in Korea come back to them naturally. For us, too, these photos have become something precious to keep this welcome meeting for a long time.
Even a short class becomes a scene to remember Korea by
For students visiting Korea, there will be much to remember — scenery seen for the first time, food, new people. What gave this meeting its meaning was that, among all that, there was also time spent studying Korean first-hand.
Memories of studying a language are not made of what you learned alone. Scenes stay with you too: which classroom you studied in, who you studied with, what materials you opened. We hope the time at GANADA KOREAN Hongdae becomes a memory that makes the students smile when they think of Korea.
