Korean stories starting in GANADA Hongdae
Episode 03. Why can't I speak Korean?
“It’s been over a year since I started studying Korean, but I still freeze up when I try to speak to native speakers.”
This is something we often hear from our students. You know plenty of vocabulary, and you’ve learned a lot of grammar. You can read textbooks without a problem and score high on tests. But the moment you actually meet a native Korean speaker, your mind goes blank.
“What should I say?”
It can feel as if all the Korean you knew has suddenly vanished.
However, this is completely natural. Knowing a language in your head is very different from speaking it out loud. Just like how reading books about riding a bicycle won’t help you ride one until you actually push the pedals, Korean requires real, spoken practice.
That is why at Ganada, we believe speaking up comes first—even before avoiding mistakes.
A teacher asks:
“What did you do over the weekend?”
You pause to think, then answer:
“I… met my friend.”
It’s perfectly okay if it sounds a bit hesitant. You try saying it once, try it again, and refine it to sound a little more natural. Then one day after class, you find yourself using those exact same words at a cafe in Hongdae. In that moment, the Korean you learned in the classroom truly becomes yours.
Being good at Korean might not mean speaking perfectly. It might just mean having the courage to start a conversation, even if you make a few mistakes. At Ganada, we want to help you learn Korean with that kind of courage.
🌿 Today’s Hongdae Mission
Try asking a Korean native one question today:
“What did you do over the weekend?”
Don’t spend too much time trying to construct a perfect sentence. Just give it a try. Because Korean becomes yours the moment you start speaking it.
